Mam Tor Cavedale Loop, High Peak

This linear route through the heart of the Derbyshire Peak District links some of the White Peak's most atmospheric landmarks, tracing quiet paths between Mam Tor and Peak Forest. Setting out beneath the shattered eastern face of the Shivering Mountain, you soon reach the remains of Odin Mine, where the great stone crushing wheel still lies beside the beck at Odin Sitch as a reminder of centuries of lead working.

From here the path drops towards Castleton, passing the sombre Roll of Honour before reaching the yawning mouth of Peak Cavern, long known as the Devil's Arse and one of the largest cave entrances in Britain. The route then climbs steadily out of the gorge onto the limestone plateau, crossing Windy Knoll with its wide views across Rushup Edge and the Hope Valley.

The final stretch strikes south across open pasture and quiet lanes to finish in the village of Peak Forest. Along the way you can glimpse Treak Cliff Cavern, home of the rare Blue John stone, and the scars of the Broken Road and Dirtlow Rake, all testament to the landscape's long industrial past.
