About this walk
This gentle circular walk explores the shores of Malham Tarn, one of England's highest natural lakes and the centrepiece of a National Nature Reserve in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. At just under three kilometres with modest ascent, it is an easy outing that suits most abilities and packs a lot of upland character into a short loop.
The route skirts the tarn through a mosaic of wetland, limestone grassland and scattered woodland, with open views across the water to the surrounding fells. You pass Water Houses on the southern side of the reserve, where the path threads between trees and the lake edge, offering quiet spots to pause and watch for waterbirds. Underfoot the going is generally good, with boardwalks helping you cross the boggier ground.
It is a peaceful contrast to the busier paths around Malham village and Malham Cove to the south, and the level terrain makes it a fine choice for a half-day visit or a relaxed start before exploring further into the Dales.
