About this walk

This 7.4 km circular walk explores the high limestone country around Malham Tarn, one of the most distinctive corners of the Yorkshire Dales. Beginning near the tarn, the route climbs gently across open pasture and rough grazing, with around 204 m of ascent spread comfortably over the loop.

The walk takes in a string of low summits and archaeologically rich hillsides, passing close to Seaty Hill and crossing the slopes beneath Great Close Scar, where pale limestone outcrops break through the turf. From here the path swings round towards Back Pasture Hill and the gentle rises of Abbot Hills, offering wide views over the tarn basin and the surrounding moors.

Underfoot you'll find a mix of grassy tracks, stony paths and exposed limestone, with traditional drystone walls dividing the pastures. Allow around two hours at a steady pace, plus time to pause for the views and to look out for the earthworks and field patterns that give this walk its archaeological character.
