About this walk
This circular walk from Long Ashton offers a satisfying loop through the gentle countryside on the southern edge of Bristol, with woodland, field paths and quiet village lanes packed into just under six miles. Setting off from the village, the route heads out towards Iron Plantation before climbing into the mixed woodland of Fenn's Wood, where the tree cover provides welcome shade in summer and a rustle of leaves underfoot in autumn.
Beyond the woods you pass the ROC Post Long Ashton, a small Cold War era relic that hints at the area's twentieth century history, before the path drops down to follow Ashton Brook through pasture and hedgerow. The return leg winds back into the village past The Former Vicarage, giving the final stretch a distinctly parish feel.
Long Ashton itself rewards a wander at either end of the walk, with the War Memorial, Northleaze School, The Former Village Club and a plaque to wartime heroine Andrée Peel among the points of local interest. Views out towards Ashton Hill add a wider sense of the North Somerset landscape.
