About this walk
This short circular walk climbs Lodge Hill on the outskirts of Caerleon, offering a satisfying taste of countryside within easy reach of Newport. Setting off past Lodge Farm Church, the path rises steadily through mixed woodland and open ground, gaining around 131 metres over a compact 2.6 km.
The undoubted highlight is the Iron Age hill fort crowning the summit, its earthwork ramparts still clearly traceable among the trees. From the top there are glimpses across the Usk valley and out towards the surrounding Gwent countryside, a fine spot to pause before the descent.
The route finishes in Caerleon itself, a village long associated with Roman heritage and now a pleasant place to end a walk with a café or a look at the historic streets. Nearby green spaces including Grove Park, Lodge Park and Home Farm Park make it easy to extend the outing if you have time to spare.
