About this walk

The Little Avon Circuit is a short and gentle loop through the quiet countryside on the southern edge of the Cotswolds, starting and finishing in the village of Hawkesbury. At just 2.4 km with a modest 55 m of ascent, it makes an easy half-hour outing that packs in a good sense of the rolling South Gloucestershire landscape.

From Hawkesbury the route heads out across fields and lanes towards Horton, the midway point, before curving back to the start. Along the way you catch glimpses of the Little Avon River, which threads through this corner of the county, and the walk sits within easy reach of Lower Woods Nature Reserve, one of the largest ancient woodlands in the West of England.

The going is straightforward and well suited to a first-time visitor or a quick leg-stretch, with hedged pasture, farm tracks and quiet village edges making up most of the scenery. It is a pleasant introduction to an often overlooked stretch of countryside between the Severn Vale and the Cotswold escarpment.
