About this walk
This linear walk traces the River Kent south from Kendal to the village of Sizergh, covering 6.5 km with only modest ascent. Leaving the town behind, the path follows the riverbank through a quiet green corridor on the edge of the Lake District National Park, with the wooded slopes of the Kent valley opening up as you go.
Along the way you pass the Wooden Throne, a carved riverside seat that makes a natural pause point, before reaching the remains of the Basingill Gunpowder Works, one of several sites in the area that once used the Kent's fast-flowing water to power industry. The ruins now sit peacefully among the trees, slowly being reclaimed by woodland.
Nearby points of interest add to a full day out: Castle Hill above Kendal, the historic Bishop Blaize Inn, the site of the Alauna Roman fort, and Romney Gardens close to the river in town. The route ends near Sizergh, where you can pick up onward transport back to Kendal.
