About this walk

This linear route traces part of the Ashridge Estate on the Hertfordshire edge of the Chilterns, following ground shaped by the celebrated eighteenth-century landscape designer Lancelot "Capability" Brown. Starting out across Aldbury Common, the path threads through open heath and mature woodland typical of this corner of the estate, with gentle undulations adding up to a modest climb.

The route passes close to Ashridge House and its management college, an imposing country seat set within grounds laid out in the picturesque manner. From here you continue into Cromer Wood, a quiet stretch of beech and oak, before finishing in the wider Ashridge landscape. Nearby stand the Brownlow Memorial, Thunderdell Wood and Robin Hood Farm, all easily worked into a longer wander if time allows.

At around 6.5 km with 123 m of ascent, the walk takes roughly one hour and forty-five minutes at a steady pace. Being linear, it suits walkers happy to plan a return by foot, bus or a pre-arranged pick-up from the far end.
