About this walk

Starting and finishing in the village of Delamere and Oakmere, the Hunger Hill Trail is a compact circular route through the heart of Delamere Forest, Cheshire's largest area of woodland. At just over four kilometres with a gentle 142 metres of ascent, it packs a satisfying variety of forest scenery into a walk of around an hour and a quarter.

The path climbs steadily away from the village and threads through mixed conifer and broadleaf stands, passing close to Doolittle Moss, one of the peat mires that give this corner of Cheshire its distinctive character. Nearby lie Blakemere Moss, the large restored wetland at the forest's centre, along with Black Lake and Black Nursery, all worth a short detour if time allows.

Waymarking is straightforward and the going is easy underfoot on forest tracks and paths. The route also passes memorials to Private Heber Robinson and Private Samuel Sanders, quiet reminders tucked among the trees. It is an ideal short outing for families or anyone arriving by train at Delamere station and looking for a taste of the forest on foot.
