Horse Head Moor and Deepdale walk, Upper Wharfdale

This linear route through Upper Wharfedale links two of the dale's quietest hamlets by way of a high, breezy crossing of Horse Head Moor. Starting at Beckermonds, where the becks meet to form the young River Wharfe, the path climbs steadily out of the valley onto open moorland with wide views back over the dale.

The ascent to Horse Head is the work of the day, gaining over 300 metres before the ground levels onto rough upland pasture. Along the way you pass an old lime kiln, a reminder of the small-scale industry that once dotted these hillsides, and Robin Hood's Well offers a traditional pause. From the top, the descent drops gently towards Yockenthwaite, a tiny cluster of stone farmhouses set beside the Wharfe.

At around 7 km with 334 m of ascent, it is a moderate half-day outing suited to walkers happy with open moorland underfoot. Allow roughly two hours of walking time, plus stops to take in the views over Langstrothdale.
