About this walk

Beginning in the quiet village of Horningsea, just north-east of Cambridge, this gentle circular walk pairs village lanes with the peaceful towpath of the River Cam. From the village centre you pass the War Memorial and the well-known Plough & Fleece before heading out across low-lying fields towards the water.

The route joins the river near Baites Byte Lock, one of the working locks that punctuate this stretch of the Cam, and follows the towpath through open wetland scenery rich in birdlife. You continue past The Bridge at Clayhithe, a familiar riverside landmark, before turning back inland. Along the way there are views towards Biggin Abbey and the chance to detour into Cow Hollow Wood, a small pocket of woodland tucked into the otherwise flat, watery landscape.

At 7.8 km with almost no ascent, it is an easy afternoon's outing, though field paths and towpath edges can become soft after rain. The return to Horningsea completes a satisfying loop that showcases the understated charm of the Cambridgeshire fens on the city's doorstep.
