About this walk
This gentle circular walk begins and ends at Basildon in West Berkshire, tracing a compact loop of just under four kilometres through the wooded folds of the Basildon Park estate. Despite the modest distance, the route packs in a satisfying 126 metres of ascent as it dips into the sheltered hollow that gives the walk its name.
From the start at Basildon, the path leads into the grounds of Basildon Park, where mature parkland trees frame open views across the Berkshire countryside. The trail then drops into a quiet, tucked-away valley, following the contours before climbing gently back towards the parkland edge and returning to the start point.
Walkers with a little extra time can extend their visit by seeking out Howard's Halt nearby, a peaceful spot that complements the estate's mix of woodland and open ground. At around an hour of easy walking, the loop suits families, casual ramblers and anyone looking for a short but rewarding outing in the Chilterns fringe.
