About this walk
This 7-mile route sets out from Great Massingham, a classic north-west Norfolk village known for its broad green and tranquil duck ponds. From the village the walk heads out into open countryside on a network of quiet lanes, field-edge tracks and bridleways, climbing gently through farmland on the way towards Harpley.
Along the way you pass Scotsman's Pit, one of several old marl and chalk pits that pepper this corner of Norfolk, with Post Office Pit lying close to the route as another reminder of the area's quiet agricultural past. The walking is varied but steady, with around 133 metres of ascent spread across rolling arable land, big skies and hedgerow-lined paths.
Allow around 2 hours 45 minutes at a steady pace. Although graded challenging on account of the distance, the gradients are modest, and the open views across the gently rising Norfolk countryside reward the effort before the route returns you to the welcoming greens of Great Massingham.
