About this walk
This 7.6 km route sets out from Hollinghill and heads onto the open ground of Greenleighton Moor, a quiet corner of Northumberland just north of the Wallington estate. Although listed as linear, the walk loops out and back to the same finish point at Hollinghill, giving you around 163 m of gentle ascent across rough pasture and heather.
The middle of the route drops to cross the Fallowlees Burn, a small moorland stream that threads its way through the folds of the hills. From the higher ground you get long, uncluttered views over the fells, with the waters of Fontburn Reservoir sitting just to the south as a useful landmark. The going is typical Northumberland moor: firm tracks in places, softer and wetter underfoot in others.
Allow around three hours at a steady pace. It is a rewarding half-day out for walkers who enjoy big skies and few people, with the option to extend the day by exploring the paths around Fontburn Reservoir before heading home.
