About this walk
The opening stage of the GM Ringway, Greater Manchester's circular walking route, sets off on a gentle urban journey across the city's western edges. Starting near the Skyhook sculpture, the path soon brings you to the heart of Manchester United territory, passing the Best, Charlton and Law statue, the Sir Matt Busby statue, the Manchester United Museum and the Sir Alex Ferguson statue clustered around Old Trafford stadium.
From the football landmarks the route continues through the streets and green corners of Trafford, eventually reaching the Church of Christ Meeting Place. Along the way you skirt the fringes of Trafford Park, one of the country's most famous industrial estates, with the Munich Air Disaster plaque a short detour for those wanting to pay respects.
At 6.9 km with barely any ascent, this is a flat, easygoing introduction to the Ringway. Refreshment options nearby include the Oxnoble and Cask, both popular stops for a post-walk pint. Being linear, it pairs neatly with onward tram or train links back into the city centre.
