Fountains Abbey Ancient Trees Walk

This gentle linear walk through the Studley Royal estate near Fountains Abbey takes in some of North Yorkshire's most venerable trees alongside a string of Georgian follies and landmarks. Setting off past The Chorister's House and Studley Royal House, the path winds through parkland where ancient sweet chestnuts, oaks and limes have stood for centuries.

The route continues past the estate's historic Ice Houses before opening out beside the calm expanse of Studley Lake, a favourite spot for waterfowl and reflections of the surrounding trees. Climbing gently, you reach The Obelisk, a prominent landmark set on high ground, before descending towards the Restaurant where the walk concludes.

With only modest ascent and a well-kept surface throughout, the walk is easy underfoot yet packed with things to see. Nearby you'll find the Banqueting House, Octagon Tower, Temple of Piety, Fountains Hall and the celebrated ruins of Fountains Abbey itself, all within the wider World Heritage Site and easily added to your day.
