About this walk
This short linear stretch of the former Chiltern Way offers a gentle half-hour amble through the quiet countryside on the edge of Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire. Setting out near the Old Bell, the path eases along with only modest ascent, making it an approachable outing for almost anyone with half an hour to spare.
The route threads through the pastoral landscape that defines this corner of the county, with the River Lea winding nearby and the leafy fringes of Ambrose Wood adding shade and birdsong. Small landmarks such as the church of St Charalambos and the hamlet of East Hyde sit within easy reach, giving the walk a distinct sense of place even over such a short distance.
You finish in Wheathampstead itself, a village well provided with cafes, pubs and shops, so it is easy to round off the walk with a leisurely lunch or a browse before heading home. As a linear route, a little planning with local buses or a return stroll back along the same path will complete the day.
