Foresters' Walk, Ashridge Estate

Foresters' Walk is an easy circular route through the Ashridge Estate on the Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire border, high on the Chiltern escarpment. The walk sets out from the Bridgewater Monument, a tall stone column that stands amid the beech and oak woodland at the heart of the estate and provides an easy landmark to return to.

From the monument, the path threads through mixed broadleaf woodland, with quiet rides and clearings typical of this corner of the Chilterns. The route brushes close to Thunderdell Wood and the open heath and scrub of Pitstone Common, both good spots for pausing to look out for woodland birds and grazing deer among the trees.

At roughly 3 miles with only modest ascent, the loop takes around an hour and a quarter at a steady pace. Underfoot is generally straightforward woodland track and estate path, making it a relaxed half-morning outing that finishes back at the monument and its nearby tea room.
