This short circular heritage trail at Fell Foot offers an easy introduction to the southern shore of Windermere, England's largest lake. At just under three kilometres with modest ascent, it makes a relaxed outing that can comfortably be walked in under an hour, leaving plenty of time to linger by the water.
The route weaves through the lakeside parkland and gentle wooded slopes that frame this corner of Cumbria. You'll pass close to the Landing Hole, a quiet inlet on the lake shore, with views opening out across the water and the surrounding fells. The trail is well suited to families and anyone after a gentle leg-stretch rather than a hill day.
Nearby Lakeside and the village of Staveley-in-Cartmel make natural add-ons before or after the walk, with refreshments and a flavour of the southern Lakes. Although described as linear in some sources, the heritage trail loops back through the grounds, so you return to your starting point without retracing the whole route.
