About this walk

This short linear walk traces the quiet edge of the Newtown estuary on the north-west coast of the Isle of Wight, threading through a mosaic of ancient copses and tidal saltmarsh. From the East Bird Hide you can pause to scan the sheltered creeks for wading birds before the path slips inland through Town Copse and Taylor's Copse, where old coppiced woodland shades the way.

Midway the route emerges at the Newtown Old Town Hall, an unexpected landmark standing almost alone in the fields, a reminder that this peaceful hamlet was once a planned medieval borough. Beyond it, the trail continues through Fleetlands Copse and Walter's Copse, both known for their spring wildflowers and birdsong, before finishing back in the tiny settlement of Newtown.

At just 3 km with a gentle 63 m of ascent, it makes an easy 45-minute outing, easily extended by detouring to the Mercia Seabroke Bird Hide, Causeway Lake, Windgate Copse or Cassey Bridge nearby.
