About this walk

This 2.2 km linear route follows an estate track rising out of the wooded Hardcastle Crags valley in West Yorkshire. The ascent is consistent rather than fierce, gaining around 181 metres over the climb, and rewards walkers with widening views across the steep beech and pine woodland that the Crags are known for.

The track itself is the focus, a firm sustained pull uphill, but the surrounding landscape carries plenty of interest. Look out across the valley towards Shackleton and the open moor edge, where Willow Rock and the Slack Bottom Standing Stone sit within the broader landscape above the trees. The Smeekin Hill War Memorial lies within reach for those extending their walk on the tops.

As a linear route, you return the way you came, which makes the descent considerably easier than the climb. Allow around 45 minutes one way and a little less coming back down. It pairs well with the wider network of paths through Hardcastle Crags if you fancy stretching the day out into something longer.
