About this walk

This short linear walk traces the Afon Clywedog through the wooded grounds on the edge of Erddig Park, just south of Wrexham. Setting off through quiet parkland, the path soon drops towards the river, where mature trees and gentle slopes give the route a sheltered, away-from-it-all feel despite its closeness to town.

Along the way you pass the estate's old Dovecote, then follow the river upstream to the Cup and Saucer Waterfall, a curious circular weir where the Clywedog tumbles into a stone basin. Continuing on, the path climbs gently to the Erddig Motte, the earthwork remains of an early medieval castle mound set on a bluff above the river.

The surrounding landscape takes in The Rookery, Big Wood and Forest Wood, with Brickfield Sports Field providing an alternative way in from the Wrexham side. At around 2.7 km with only modest ascent, it makes an easy half-morning outing that combines river scenery, woodland and a slice of local history.
