About this walk

This gentle linear walk threads through a quietly atmospheric corner of West Yorkshire, linking woodland, beck-side paths and traces of the area's Roman past. From the start you drop into Hellpot Wood, following the shaded ground above the water before emerging near Pompocali, a striking series of earthworks tucked between the trees.

The route then picks up the line of Roman Road RR72(b), an old surveyed way that once carried traffic across this part of Yorkshire. Along the way there are glimpses of Castle Hill and the neighbouring Hetchell Wood, with Gill Beck and Keswick Beck murmuring nearby and the Scarcroft Plantations rising to one side.

The walking is straightforward throughout, with only modest ascent, and finishes on the edge of the village of Bardsey. It is an easy half-day outing that rewards a slow pace, especially where the woodland opens onto the earthworks and the old road threads between hedgerows.
