About this walk

The Eamont Way traces a linear 8.9 km route through the gentle countryside on the fringes of Penrith in Cumbria, following the valley of the River Eamont as it flows out towards the northern Lake District. Setting off from St Pauls, the path threads past Mill Moor and Thorpefield before crossing the quieter farmland around Redhills and Skirsgill, finishing near The Rooster.

The walking is varied without being demanding, with a modest 159 m of ascent spread across the route. Along the way there are opportunities to detour to Yanwath Hall and the neighbouring Courtyard Range, while the Boer War Memorial known as the Black Angel and the Birkett Memorial provide further points of interest. To the west, Dunmallard Hill rises above the head of Ullswater, hinting at the fells that lie just beyond.

At around 2 hours 15 minutes, this is a manageable half-day outing that links a string of small hamlets and river landscapes, offering a taste of the transitional country between the Eden Valley and the Lakes.
