About this walk

This linear walk climbs from Dover's busy waterfront up to the National Trust visitor centre perched above the famous White Cliffs. Setting out from the Cruise Terminal, you pass the Cinque Port Arms and the site of the former Grand Shaft Barracks, a reminder of Dover's long history as a garrison town guarding the shortest crossing to the continent.

The route then heads through the town centre, crossing the Bascule Bridge and passing The Crypt on Bench Street before reaching Canon's Gate House. From here the way begins to climb in earnest, gaining around 224 metres over its 3.3 kilometres, with the harbour opening out below as you go.

Passing a memorial to Admiral Ramsay and continuing above Castle Jetty, the path pulls up towards the chalk headland and the visitor centre. Along the way there are views across to Harbour Battery, Dover Pier and the piers of the Eastern Docks, with the ferries and cruise ships far below giving a sense of just how high the cliffs really are.
