About this walk

The Ditchford Muddy Boot Trail is a gentle 2.4 km circuit starting and finishing in Rushden, looping through the Ditchford Lakes and Meadows nature reserve in the Nene Valley. With only 22 m of ascent and a half-hour pace, it suits families, casual strollers and anyone looking to stretch their legs close to town.

From the trailhead the path leads to the Boardwalk Relaxation Zone, a quiet spot to pause above the wetland edges, before reaching the BCN Wildlife Discovery Centre. The route then follows the lakes and meadows alongside the River Nene Navigation, taking in views across the reedy pools that make this stretch of the valley such a draw for birdlife.

The loop passes Delta Pit, an SSSI and Ramsar-listed water reserve, where flooded former gravel workings now support important wetland habitats. Nearby you can extend the day with a wander past Mill Stream or Canal Lake (Wilsons Pits), or head back into Rushden for a coffee at Costa before catching onward transport.
