Discover Langstrothdale valley trail, Upper Wharfdale

This short circular route explores Langstrothdale, the upper reach of Wharfedale where the young River Wharfe runs clear over pale limestone shelves. Starting from the hamlet of Yockenthwaite, the path follows the valley floor through open pasture stitched together by drystone walls, with the bare tops of the Yorkshire Dales rising on either side.

The trail heads upstream towards Deepdale, where a small cluster of stone barns and farmhouses sits beside the river. Along the way you pass riverside meadows and the characteristic stepped ledges of the Wharfe, a quietly beautiful stretch that is easy walking despite the modest climb. Returning on the opposite bank closes the loop back to Yockenthwaite.

At just over 3 km with under 90 m of ascent, this is a gentle introduction to one of the most unspoilt corners of Upper Wharfedale, well suited to a half-morning out or an easy afternoon stroll.
