About this walk
This 4.7 km circular begins in Thornton-le-Dale, a well-known village on the southern edge of the North York Moors, and heads out on the waymarked red trail towards the forest. The route climbs steadily, gathering around 235 m of ascent as it works its way up through mixed woodland alongside Thornton Beck.
The path leads north into the quiet edges of Dalby Forest, passing close to Low Dalby before turning back towards the village. Along the way you can look out for an earthwork and a tumulus set within the woods, hints of the long human presence in this corner of North Yorkshire. The nearby Dalby Forest Visitor Centre makes an easy add-on if you fancy extending the day.
Allow around an hour and a half at a steady pace. The return leg drops back down the beck-side into Thornton-le-Dale, where cafes and the village stream make a pleasant finish.
