About this walk
This short linear route climbs through the wooded valley of Hardcastle Crags, a steep-sided beauty spot tucked into the South Pennines near Hebden Bridge. Despite its modest distance of 2.3 km, the walk packs in 147 metres of ascent, giving your legs a proper stretch in under an hour.
The path threads through mature beech and oak woodland, with the sound of Hebden Water never far below. Gritstone outcrops break through the trees in places, hinting at the crags that give the valley its name. Underfoot you will find woodland tracks and the occasional steeper pull as the route gains height away from the river.
As a linear walk you can either retrace your steps or link it into one of the longer loops that criss-cross the National Trust estate. At a brisk 45 minutes one-way, it makes a good leg-stretcher for anyone arriving in the valley with limited time, or a warm-up before exploring further into the woods.
