About this walk
Starting and finishing at Loweswater in the quieter western fells of the Lake District, this 5.8 km circular follows an old corpse road above one of Cumbria's most peaceful lakes. From the shore the route heads to Maggies Bridge and then along the valley track to High Nook Farm, tucked beneath the fellside at the foot of Highnook Beck.
From the farm the path climbs steadily, gaining most of the walk's 405 m of ascent as it traces the historic corpse road across open ground. Highnook Tarn sits quietly to one side, and there are wide views back over Loweswater and the surrounding fells. The route passes close to the remains of the Whiteoak Lead Mine before dropping towards Holme Force, a tumbling waterfall set in woodland.
The descent leads through Kirkgill Wood and back along the lakeside to the start. At around two hours, it is a satisfying moderate outing that combines lake, farm track, open fell and waterfall in a compact loop.
