Coombe Hill Woodland Walk, Central Chilterns

This gentle circular walk in the central Chilterns links the open heights of Coombe Hill with the quiet woodland around the village of Dunsmore. At 5.7 km with just over 100 metres of ascent, it makes an easy half-day outing on well-used paths through beech woods and along breezy chalk downland edges.

From Coombe Hill the route sets off across one of the highest viewpoints in the Chilterns, with wide sweeping views over the Aylesbury Vale before dropping into shaded beech hangers. Paths lead through classic Chiltern woodland to Dunsmore, a small hilltop hamlet that makes a natural halfway point, before curving back through more woodland and open glades to return to the start.

The going is straightforward throughout, following clear tracks and field paths with only modest climbs. It is a good introduction to the character of the central Chilterns, mixing airy chalk grassland with the deep, quiet feel of mature beech woods.
