Cookham Wetland and Wildlife Trial, Maidenhead

This gentle circular walk near Maidenhead loops through the wetlands and meadows around Cookham, taking in a string of watery landmarks along the way. Starting from the edge of the village, the route heads out across Cookham Moor, a low-lying stretch of common land that gives an immediate sense of the flat, water-shaped countryside typical of this corner of the Thames Valley.

From the Moor the trail follows Strande Water and picks up Fleet Ditch, small watercourses that thread between hedgerows and damp pasture. With only 21 metres of ascent across the full 4.8 km, the going is easy underfoot and well suited to an unhurried hour outdoors. Widbrook Common lies close by, adding further open ground for those who fancy a small detour.

Back in the village you are within easy reach of Holy Trinity church and the King's Arms, both handy for rounding off the walk. Maidenhead Ditch runs nearby too, a reminder of how thoroughly this landscape is stitched together by quiet channels and ditches rather than dramatic hills.
