Coed Forest Walk, Erddig

This gentle 5.6 km circular loop explores the wooded fringes of the Erddig estate, a National Trust property on the southern edge of Wrexham. Setting out near The Rookery at Erddig, the path soon reaches the Erddig Motte, the grassy mound of a medieval castle earthwork that predates the later country house. From here the trail drops into Coed-y-glyn Wood, where mature broadleaves line the route.

The walk continues past New Sontley Farm and into Big Wood, one of the larger blocks of woodland on the estate. You'll pass a dovecote tucked into the parkland before looping back via Sontley Lodge Farm. With only 116 m of ascent spread across the route, the going stays comfortable throughout, and there are quiet field edges and shaded woodland tracks in roughly equal measure.

Allow around an hour and a half, and keep an eye out for nearby features such as the disused corn mill at Mill House, Lewis Wood, and the Black Brook, which threads through this corner of the Erddig landscape.
