About this walk

This easy circular walk starts and finishes in the village of Llanarth in the rolling Monmouthshire countryside, tracing a quiet route through the lower Usk Valley. Setting out on field paths and lanes, you soon reach the mixed woodland of Twyn y Cregen Wood, a shaded stretch that offers welcome cover on warmer days and glimpses out across the surrounding farmland.

The route passes the Clytha Arms, a well-placed country pub that makes a natural stop for refreshment, before climbing gently towards Clytha Castle. This eye-catching Gothic folly stands on its rise above the valley and is one of the best known landmarks in this corner of East Wales, with fine views back towards the hills.

From the castle, the path loops back through pasture and hedged lanes to Llanarth, completing a short but varied outing of just over an hour. With only around 105 metres of ascent, it suits walkers looking for a relaxed half-day, and nearby Evan's Wood and St Mary's are easily added if you want to extend your explorations.
