About this walk
Starting near Taplow, this short linear trail winds through the wooded grounds of Cliveden, one of the National Trust's grand Thames-side estates in Buckinghamshire. At just under three kilometres with a gentle 104 metres of ascent, it is an easy outing that packs in a surprising variety of formal gardens and shaded woodland paths.
The route passes the imposing Duke of Sutherland Statue before leading you down to The Water Garden, a tranquil corner known for its lily pools and Japanese-inspired planting. From there the path continues to The Long Garden, with its clipped topiary and seasonal borders. Along the way you are never far from the wider estate's landmarks, including Cliveden House itself, the Cockerell and Blenheim Pavilions, and the small estate Chapel.
Extend your visit by continuing down through the beech woods towards Hedsor Water, a peaceful backwater of the Thames below the escarpment. Allow around 45 minutes for the walk itself, but plenty longer if you want to linger over the views and gardens.
