About this walk
This short circular route loops around the top of Culver Down on the eastern tip of the Isle of Wight, packing in big sea views for very little effort. Starting near the National Trust car park, the path curves out to the Culver Millennium Beacon and along the grassy clifftop above Culver Cliff, where the chalk falls sharply to the Channel below.
From the cliff edge the route continues past the remains of Culver Down Battery, a reminder of the down's role in coastal defence, before rising gently to the Yarborough Monument, the tall stone obelisk that crowns the summit and acts as a landmark for miles around. On a clear day you can pick out Sandown Bay to the west and the open sea stretching south towards the Nab.
The return leg drops back across open downland to close the loop. At around 2.1 km with 90 m of ascent, it takes roughly half an hour, and the nearby Wonky Cafe makes an easy stop for a drink or a slice of cake once you're back at the top.
