About this walk
This gentle route on the Ashridge Estate combines two mobility-friendly trails to give an easy taste of one of the Chilterns' most-loved landscapes. Starting near Down Farm, the path winds through open estate country before rising steadily towards Moneybury Hill, where the ground opens out and the beech woods that cloak this corner of Hertfordshire come into view.
The centrepiece is the Bridgewater Monument, a tall stone column standing above the trees and long a landmark for walkers on the Ashridge Estate. From here the trail continues along the Duncombe Terrace section, edging Aldbury Common with its mix of grazed heath, ancient trees and quiet clearings.
Although classed as a linear walk of 3.6 km with a modest 137 m of ascent, the surfaced trails make it manageable for most, and there is plenty to pause for along the way. Nearby Clipper Down, Dockey Wood, Pitstone Common and Sallow Copse offer easy add-ons if you would like to extend the day into the wider Chilterns woodland.
