About this walk
This linear walk on the Lizard peninsula links the hamlet of Chyanvounder with the sheltered inlet of Gunwalloe Fishing Cove, following field paths and a stretch of the South West Coast Path above the sea. Setting out past Chyvarloe Farm, the route drops gradually towards the coast, with wide views over Mount's Bay opening up as you approach the cliffs.
Near the coast you pass a memorial to HMS Anson, wrecked off this shore, before dropping down to Gunwalloe Beach. A short climb takes you up to the Halzephron Inn, a welcome halfway stop, then on past the Gunwalloe Playing Field to the fishing cove itself. Along the way there are glimpses towards Loe Bar, the shingle ridge that seals Cornwall's largest natural freshwater lake, and quieter corners such as Park Bean Cove and Baulk Head.
The landscape here is characteristic of the western Lizard: low cliffs, small sandy beaches tucked between headlands, and gentle farmland running almost to the sea. At 5.1 km with a little over 200 m of ascent, it is a satisfying half-day outing that packs in coast, history and a Cornish inn.
