About this walk
This gentle 5.8 km circular explores the wooded ridge of Chattenden, on the Hoo Peninsula north of the Medway towns. With around 148 m of cumulative ascent spread over an hour and a half, it makes a relaxed half-day outing on quiet lanes and woodland tracks, with no serious climbs to worry about.
The route threads through Broad Ash Wood, where mixed broadleaves and conifers shelter a tangle of bridleways, before easing out onto Cooling Street, a country lane running through open farmland towards the marsh-edge villages beyond. A small Wesleyan Chapel marks one of the waypoints, a reminder of the scattered hamlets that once served this corner of north Kent.
From the higher ground there are glimpses across to Cliffe Woods, Lodge Hill and the wooded slopes around Berry Court Wood and Perryhill, with Woodside Green lying a little further afield. It is a quiet, low-key landscape of woods, hedged fields and big skies, returning you to the start through more of Chattenden's shaded paths.
