About this walk

This compact but energetic loop explores one of the South Downs' most striking landforms, the dramatic dry valley known as The Devil's Dyke. Starting high on the ridge, the route soon reaches the ramparts of Devils Dyke Hillfort, an Iron Age enclosure whose earthworks still trace the crown of the hill and offer sweeping views over the Weald.

From the fort, paths drop into and around the great chasm itself, giving a real sense of the valley's scale and steepness. You'll pass the remains of the old cableway, a reminder of the Victorian pleasure resort that once drew crowds to this spot, before the climb back up rewards you with the welcome sight of The Wildflower Cafe near the ridge top.

At 4.7 km with 318 m of ascent, this is a short walk that packs in plenty of height gain and big views. Nearby, you can extend the day by wandering out to North Hill, dropping down to Poynings for the Royal Oak and the village church, or seeking out the curious well house with its donkey wheel.
