About this walk

The Carntogher Way is an 8 km linear route in the Sperrin foothills of County Londonderry, beginning and ending at Sleacht Néill (Slaghtneill). It climbs steadily onto the flanks of Carntogher, gaining around 325 m over open upland ground and rewarding the effort with wide views across the surrounding countryside.

From the start at Sleacht Néill the path leads out to Carn Bridge, then on past Altkeeran Waterfall, a lively cascade tucked into the hillside. The route continues up to the summit cairn at Carn Tóchair before returning to the finish at Sleacht Néill. Along the way you pass close to Skelp Well and cross ground drained by the Carntogher Burn and Backparks Burn, with the source of the Knockoneill River rising nearby.

Allow around 2 hours 15 minutes at a steady pace. The mix of waterfalls, moorland burns and a prominent hilltop cairn makes this a rewarding half-day outing, and the linear layout means the return leg brings the views back in reverse.
