About this walk

This 6.9 km loop links the market town of Caldicot with the Severn Estuary shore, offering wide skies, coastal paths and a touch of ancient history. Setting out from Caldicot, the route heads south across low-lying farmland towards the water, gradually opening up views across the estuary towards the English coast.

The Black Rock Picnic Site marks the walk's turning point, sitting close to the great Severn crossings and providing a fine spot to pause and watch the tides sweep across some of the highest tidal ranges in the world. From here the path picks up the shoreline before climbing gently to Sudbrook hill fort, an Iron Age promontory earthwork perched above the cliffs, where the ramparts are still clearly visible.

Continuing inland, you pass the ruins known as Harold's House before quiet lanes and field paths lead you back to Caldicot. With only around 65 m of ascent spread over the route, it is a moderate outing that packs in coast, history and countryside in under two hours.
