About this walk
This gentle 4.1 km linear route heads out into the open Galloway hills from a quiet start in Dumfries and Galloway, following the lower approach towards Cairnsmore of Carsphairn by way of the Green Well. With only around 60 metres of ascent spread over an hour of walking, it makes an easy introduction to a landscape that quickly feels remote.
The walk begins beside the Water of Deugh, crossing an old bridge before striking out on rough hill tracks. The burn is a constant companion in the early stages, tumbling through rushy pasture with the bulk of Dunool rising ahead. As the path climbs steadily, wide views open across the moorland towards the higher Carsphairn tops.
Turn back where you like, or continue as far as the Green Well itself before retracing your steps to the old bridge. It is a fine taster of the Galloway uplands without the full commitment of the summit, and the return leg gives a whole new perspective on the Deugh valley.
