About this walk
Rising sharply from the edge of Cahersiveen, the Beentee Loop is a compact but demanding circuit that climbs onto one of the small mountains overlooking the town and Valentia Harbour. The route sets off near Kelly's and works its way up through Garranebane, gaining height quickly on tracks and open hillside as the rooftops of the town fall away below.
The high point is Bentee itself, where on a clear day the view stretches across the Iveragh Peninsula, out to Valentia Island and the Atlantic beyond. From the summit the path descends towards Carhan Upper, passing the holy well of Tobar na mBan Fionn before returning through farmland near Mike Murt's and back into Cahersiveen.
At just under 10 km with close to 500 m of ascent, this is a short walk with real bite. Back in town, the Old Barracks, the Abbey of the Holy Cross and Tom's Tavern are all within easy reach for a well-earned rest.
