About this walk

This moderate linear walk in West Cork climbs into the hills above Kealkill, taking in a fine mix of upland scenery and quiet archaeology. Setting out from Ahil More, the route heads through Bulls Pocket and on past Kippaghingergill and Tooreen, following country tracks and lanes with steady views opening across the surrounding valleys.

The highlight for many walkers is the Maughanasilly Stone Row, a low line of standing stones set on a rise with a wide outlook over the hills. From here the walk returns towards Ahil More and finishes near Carriganass Castle, a ruined tower house on the banks of the Ouvane River just outside Kealkill village.

At around 7.4 km with 219 m of ascent, it makes for a satisfying half-day out. Kealkill itself sits a short stroll away, with Collins Bar handy for a post-walk pint, and Lough Beg and the Ouvane River worth a detour if you have time to linger.
