About this walk

This linear route sets off from the village of Summerbridge in Nidderdale, climbing steadily out of the valley towards the open expanse of Brimham Moor. The ascent is honest rather than punishing, gaining around 150 metres over a short distance, and rewards you quickly with widening views back across the dale.

The path threads up through High Wood before emerging onto the moor, where the extraordinary weathered outcrops of Brimham Rocks SSSI come into view. Wandering the boundary you can pick out named formations such as the Druid's Idol and the small water-filled basin known as Adam's Ale, each shaped over millennia by wind and rain acting on the gritstone. Brimham Rocks Cafe sits nearby if you fancy a pause before turning back.

The return retraces your steps down to Summerbridge, with the descent giving fresh perspectives on the wooded slopes and pastures of upper Nidderdale. At roughly 3.8 km and around an hour of walking, it is a satisfying moorland taster that pairs well with a longer explore among the rocks themselves.
