About this walk

This circular walk from Brancaster combines quiet inland lanes and field paths with the tidal creeks and salt marshes of the north Norfolk coast. Starting near St Mary's Church, the route heads inland past Valley Farm, climbing gently through farmland with wide skies overhead before turning back towards the sea.

The path then meets the site of Branodunum Roman Fort, once a Saxon Shore fort guarding the coast, though little remains above ground today. From here you drop down to Brancaster Staithe, a working harbour known for its fishing boats, mudflats and abundant birdlife. The creeks and marshes here are excellent for spotting waders, brent geese and marsh harriers depending on the season.

The return leg passes The White Horse, a well-placed stop for refreshment overlooking the marshes, before looping back to the start. With only modest ascent spread over the distance, it is a rewarding half-day outing that combines big-sky landscapes, coastal wildlife and a touch of Roman history.
