About this walk
Starting in the village of Basildon, this 3-mile linear route follows the perimeter of Basildon Park, the National Trust estate set above the Thames in West Berkshire. The walking is steady rather than strenuous, but with around 163 metres of ascent spread across the route you get a real sense of the rolling ground where the Chilterns slope down to the river.
The path skirts the parkland edge, giving glimpses across mature trees and open pasture before dipping through quieter field boundaries and shaded lanes. Along the way you pass close to Howard's Halt, a good spot to pause and take in the surroundings, while the nearby Mid Thames Model Boat Club adds a curious local landmark for those willing to detour a short way off route.
Being linear, the walk finishes away from your start, so it suits anyone planning a onward bus or train connection rather than a loop back to the car park. Allow around an hour and a quarter at a comfortable pace, or longer if you stop to enjoy the views.
