Bookham Common Butterfly Walk, North Downs West

This short circular walk on the western edge of the North Downs sets off from Little Bookham and loops through the quiet mosaic of woodland and grassy clearings that make Bookham Common such a rewarding place for wildlife. At just 3 km with modest ascent, it is an easy outing that packs in a surprising variety of habitats.

From the start, the path leads into the trees and passes The Birches before reaching the clearing known locally as the Isle of Wight, a sunny glade that is one of the best spots on the common for spotting butterflies on the wing. The route then curves back through mixed woodland towards Little Bookham to close the loop.

Close by you will find Little Bookham Common and the larger Great Bookham Common stretching to the north, together with Lady Chewtons Wood and the fields around Banks Farm, so it is easy to extend the walk if you have more time. The paths are well used but can be muddy after rain, so sensible footwear is a good idea year round.
