About this walk
This gentle 2.4 km loop links two of Danbury's best-loved patches of woodland, Blakes Wood and Lingwood Common. From the start the route slips into the shelter of Blakes Wood, where paths wind beneath a canopy of mixed native trees and the going is soft underfoot for much of the year.
Deeper into the wood the trail drops to Blake's Stream, a small watercourse that threads through the trees and marks the natural low point of the walk. From here the path climbs steadily, gaining most of the route's 65 m of ascent, before emerging onto the more open heath and woodland edges of Lingwood Common.
The circuit passes close to Riffhams Farm and the King Edward VIII Scout Park at Riffhams, both tucked into the wooded ridge that characterises this corner of Essex. At around 45 minutes it makes an easy half-morning outing, with enough gentle up and down to feel like a proper walk without demanding much of the legs.
